While looking for a way to ring in the new year, I was reminded of a classic episode of the t.v. series “M.A.S.H.” entitled “A War For All Seasons”. For those of you too young to remember, the events of an entire year are compressed into one half hour episode. It starts and ends with a New Year’s Eve celebration. During the party, Colonel Sherman T. “HORSE HOCKEY!” Potter dressed as Father Time gives a somber toast, hoping that this is the year the war will end and they can all go home. Of course, that wouldn’t happen for at least another two seasons.
Originally, I planned to recreate the Potter/Father Time image and post that as my “Happy New Year” card. As I thought about it some more, I came to the conclusion that, while it is a memorable image from a great series, it would just be too much of a bummer on which to launch a New Year. So, I went with a more hopeful, happy version of the 4077’s curmudgeonly C.O. offering a toast.
“Here’s to the New Year. May it be a damn sight better than the old one.”
Amen, Colonel! Save me some Scotch and Fig Newtons please!
